Salt Clay Ornaments
Supplies
- Salt Clay (or store bought clay that hardens when dry)
- Prepare ahead of time: 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water. Stir until combined. Store in airtight container.
- Thick dowel or small rolling pin
- Cookie cutter(s)
- Leaves/Fabric/Coins (to make prints)
- Pencil, bamboo skewer, or small paintbrush (for design and making hole)
- Butter knife/Spatula
- Tempera/Watercolor Paint/Paint Makers and Glitter (for painting after dry)
- Ribbon, string, or ornament hooks (for hanging after dry)
- Lay parchment paper or plastic wrap on a surface. If clay is sticky, sprinkle flour down as well.
- Roll out clay to about 1/4" thick.
- Cut any shape with cookie cutter or butter knife.
- Press fabric, coin, or leaf gently into surface to make an imprint. Peel gently away.
- Using the pencil, skewer, or paintbrush end, press a small hole at least 1/2" from edge all the way through the ornament. Make sure to gentle move the pencil in circle to wide the hold to 1/16".
- To smooth edges, dip a finger in water and rub gentle on the clay. Do the same to stick two pieces of clay together.
- Make different shapes, Try cutouts, and even layering shapes (reminder that thicker shapes will take longer to dry).
- With a spatula gently lift ornament and place on flat surface elsewhere to dry. This may take a week or more.
- Once dry, paint! Option to add gloss using ModgePodge.
- Add string/ornament hook through hole and hang to decorate.
