Kids Krafts Wednesday November 11, 2020

 Leaf Rubbing Art Prints


Supplies

  1. Crayons
  2. Art Paper (or tracing paper)
  3. Leaves, Coins, Bark, Fabric or any textured, flat object
  4. Paperweights (rocks, soup cans)

Instructions

  1. Peel paper off (a few) crayons.
  2. Place object under paper. 
  3. Secure paper with weights to prevent shifting while rubbing.
  4. Rub side of crayon with varying pressure over the paper area of object.
  5. Notice the pattern that emerges!
  6. Try both sides of the object, different colors, layering objects and other variations.

Kids Krafts Wednesday November 4, 2020

 Salt Clay Leaf Print Bowls

 


Supplies

  • Salt Clay (or Substitute ready-made art clay or Playdough) 
    • 2 cups flour 
    • 1 cup salt
    • 1 cup water
  • 6" bowl
  • Butter knife
  • Rolling pin
  • Plastic wrap/wax/parchment paper
  • Fresh leaves (or other textured items like coins, fabric, plastic pieces)
Instructions

  1. Make Salt Clay
    • Stir all three ingredients. until combined. If very sticky, add more flour. Store excess dough in airtight container.
  2. Lay sheet of plastic wrap onto counter to prevent dough sticking. 
  3. Roll a ball of dough into1/8"-1/4" pancake. 
  4. Cut a 6" circle using a cookie cutter or bowl edge. Peel away excess dough. 
  5. Place textured items onto pancake. 
  6. Place another piece of plastic wrap over dough. Gently roll.
  7. Lift paper when design complete; remove leaves. 
  8. Place bowl design side down or plain side down on bottom side of bowl. 
  9. Help edges drape and/or pinch sides slightly. 
  10. Allow to dry, then paint!

Spooky Spiderwebs



Supplies and Instructions

Option 1: Pipe Cleaners, Yarn/String, Scissors

  1. Bend two pipe cleaners at center, cross and twist together. 
  2. Twist another around center of those, and then another. 
  3. Cut length of string, tie one end on a web "spoke" close to center, and weave/loop/wrap from spoke to spoke (once or many times). 
  4. Tie to secure end. Add more lengths of string, different colors, spacing them out along spoke as you wish.

Option 2: Sticks, Glue, Yarn/String, Scissors

  1. Glue (or tie) two sticks together at center. 
  2. Starting close to center, tie one end of a piece of string then weave/loop from spoke to spoke (going over one and under the other .working your way outward from the center.
  3. Use different types of string/fabric!

Option 3: Origami Paper, Scissors

  1. Fold the paper corner to corner three times (or in half multiple times). 
  2. Cut out shapes along the edge, trim the edges to create uniquepatterns.
  3. Take care to not cut off all of one fold.
  4. Open to reveal your web!

Kids Krafts Wednesday October 21, 2020

Creepy Mobiles


Supplies

  • Popsicle Sticks (or chopsticks or short branches)
  • Yarn or Pipe Cleaners
  • Halloween themed trinkets/small toys (spooky rings, spiders, etc.)
  • Spooky Stickers
  • Your Yoga Spider (see 10/14 class)

Instructions

  1. Cross the sticks at center
  2. Use yarn/pipe cleaner to tie/twist across center in both directions to secure
  3. Use loose ends as the hanger
  4. Cut a 6" piece of string or 1/2 pipe cleaner
  5. Tie/wrap one end around a spooky item (through a wring, around a spider, etc.)
  6. Tie the other end to an arm of the mobile
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 to add more dangling items to your mobile

BOO! Tubes


Supplies

  • Cardboard tube (from TP or Paper towel) 
  • Duck tape and/or Washi Tape
  • Stickers         
  • Colored paper
  • String
  • Regular tape/glue stick       
  • Scissors 
  • Single Hole Punch
Instructions
  1. Wrap colored tapes around tube. Use as much or as little as you want!
  2. Add stickers to decorate
  3. Finish the end of the tube, choosing one or all of these:
    • Punch holes & tie strings in holes for "hair" 
    • Cut strips of paper & tape them like streamers
    • Make small cuts with scissors & bend them to make fringe
  4. Put the tube up to your mouth and say BOOOOO!
  5. What else can you do with your Boo Tube?

Yoga Spiders



Supplies
  • 1 Cotton ball (or 1 small pompom)
  • 4 pipe cleaners
  • 2 to 4 pre-glued googly eyes (or 1/8" round stickers to use as eyes)
  • Kid-safe glue (if using googly eyes that aren't sticky
  • Burlap roll (or fabric)
  • Scissors (for cutting fabric or burlap roll) - precut piece fine for those that don't want to deal with cutting.
Instructions
  1. Place the cotton ball or pompom at the center of one pipe cleaners. Tightly wrap the pipe cleaner once around the ball, then twist a few times to secure .
  2. Place this at the center of another pipe cleaner, wrap it once around then twist ends a few times to secure.
  3. Repeat with third and fourth pipe cleaners.
  4. Bend pipe cleaners like jointed spider legs.
  5. Glue a few (or more) googly eyes to the ball. 
  6. Cut a swatch of fabric or burlap.
  7. Push the pointed ends of the spider's feet (ends of the pipe cleaners) through the fabric and bend slightly to secure it on the mat. 
  8. Experiment with how many "feet" the spider needs to stand, and how you can configure it's "arms" and "legs" to make yoga poses.
